ART LEXÏNG is proud to announce the second solo exhibition by Ye Hongxing, at the gallery located in Miami’s burgeoning Ironside Arts District. The artist’s new show comes on the heels of a whirlwind year that’s seen corporate partnerships and exhibitions at internationally recognized galleries. Working with Apple, Hongxing was one of five Chinese artists selected to produce specially commissioned work for the tech company; her piece, Peaceful Home (2017) reinvented classical Nianhua folk art in her unique style. And at her Saatchi Gallery show, “Totem: Sacred Beings and Spirit Objects,” Hongxing’s profile continued to rise as one of China’s most relevant and successful contemporary artists, both at home and abroad.

The current exhibition “Modern Utopia” draws its inspiration from H.G. Wells’ 1905 novel, A Modern Utopia. This time her jewel-like canvasses are used to directly tackle mass consumerism and industrial practices. Crafted with small, individual stickers she gathers in shops around her Beijing studio, each piece is imbued with references to pop culture, mainstream media, and architecture, as well as, natural flora and fauna. These psychedelic collages represent a meeting of East and West, creating landscapes where ethnic identity and tradition is constantly pitched against the all-consuming weight

of commercialism.

“My new series is inspired by both ancient myths and our current status quo,” Hongxing explains. “These two dualities constantly intertwine in my work and becomes inseparable. Together they constitute a whole new visual presentation.”

On Hongxing’s canvases virtually anything is possible. In Whimsical No. 6, for example, mythic eastern symbols are mixed with images inspired by Rock N’ Roll, tattoos, astronauts, etc. Powerful myths lose their symbolic power, diffused among the cloud of figures she portrays. Seemingly questioning the direction of our new globalized world, Hongxing asserts past and present while leaving a bold question mark next to the future.
