The Miami based gallery ART LEXÏNG, will unveil a special exhibition entitled “Scheherazade” to celebrate the flagship showroom opening of H.N. LIN Design Center on Julu Road in Shanghai.

Lifting its special project’s name “Scheherazade” from the main female character and the storyteller in the frame narrative of the Middle Eastern collection of tales known as the One Thousand and One Nights, “Scheherazade” explores design dialogues between East and West and showcases young designers along the ancient trade route “Silk Road” and their interconnections. Through showcasing a selection of art and design works from artists/designers from China, Japan, India, Italy, France, Portugal and Australia, by investigating subjects as ceramic, silk, Islamic architecture, calligraphy, carpet weaving and glass, and their historic connections, “Scheherazade” aims at breaking down barriers and luring Shanghai audience with its unique tale.

“Scheherazade” exhibition is composed of three components: a “Scheherazade” design tent based on the set design drawing “Scheherazade” created by Leon Bakst for the famed Ballet Russes in 1910, a solo art exhibition of Iranian artist Reza Shafahi and a video screen section of the late Georgian director Sergei Parajanov’s art film “The Color of Pomegranate” - a poetic treatment of the life of 18th-century Armenian poet and troubadour Sayat-Nova.

The “Scheherazade” design tent is realized based on the set design drawing “Scheherazade” created by Leon Bakst for the famed Ballet Russes in 1910, in collboration with Shanghai-based Greek architect Kostas Chtzigiannis. One of the booth highlights is Lebanese designer Richard Yasmine’s HAWA Beirut, is a collection of very light or airy furniture inspired from the Lebanese architecture and specifically the arches that are a trademark in Lebanese heritage. HAWA in Arabic language means a light summer breeze or even a deep love, a passion towards someone or something. Hawa Beirut creates a nostalgic yet harmonious reflection to our ancestors, continuing the communication between the past, present and future generations. In the booth you will find Shanghai-based Greek designer Kostas Chatzigiannis’s sofa inspired by the infinite Chinese rice field; Melbourne-based Portugues designer Marta Figueiredo’s vibrant and evocative Totems, bridging contemporary design with traditional portuguese craftsmanship; Serena Confalonieri’s Abrabesque vases as well as Normanna, designed by Studio VI+M, It is a tribute to Sicily, the designer’s homeland, and the richness and fullness of the colours that characterise its art and architecture.

ART LEXING is pleased to present Iranian artist Reza Shafahi’s works in China for the first time. Reza Shafahi (b.1940, Iran) is a self-taught artist who, following his time as a trained wrestler, started painting at the age of 72. His influences are varied and include literature, Khayyam poems, cinema and world news past and present. A distinct drawing practice ensued and Shafahi has developed a signatory drawing style that brings together an otherworldly fascination capturing the fantastical and erotic. His work draws from the imagination and from beings that exist in the realm of dreams. His work has been exhibited in Magic of Persia (Dubai), Marlborough Chelsea Gallery, New York, SpazioA Gallery in Pistoia and the Erratum Galerie, Berlin. In 2019 he will be part of "City Prince/sses" at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

Ideas can take a long time to reach maturity and they often do so through the coming together of people around the globe., they are wonderful examples of what humanity can achieve when we focus on the common good and work together.
